Directorate I – Objectives and Innovation
The Bundeswehr’s masterminds work in Directorate I – “Objectives and Innovation”. The military and civilian staff of Directorate I monitor future-oriented trends and ideas on a global scale, analyse technological, political, social, economic and scientific developments, and evaluate scientific findings and studies for this purpose. This also includes lessons learned during deployments and exercises. NATO[1] and the EU[2], as well as the business sector, universities, associations and institutes, provide additional impetus.
Strategic political guidelines and the information gained are used to develop the Bundeswehr of the future. The resulting blueprint, i.e. the Bundeswehr Capability Profile, defines what the Bundeswehr must be capable of doing and by when – either independently or in cooperation with its allies. Innovation management in the Directorate includes systematically gathering ideas from internal and external sources, assessing them with regard to their relevance for the Bundeswehr’s capability development and supporting their implementation across all processes.
