The Saab JAS 39 Gripen C/D is a Swedish multi-role combat aircraft and the successor to the Saab JA 37 Viggen.
Gripen means "the griffin" in English. The designation JAS stands for Jakt, Attack och Spaning (hunting, attack and reconnaissance).
The first flight of the Saab 39 was in 1988, and the current version JAS 39 C/D has been in service with the Swedish Air Force (Flygvapnet) since 2005. The air forces of South Africa, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Brazil and Thailand also fly Gripen.
Compared to the A/B version, the JAS 39 C/D has a redesigned cockpit with new electronic displays, and new weapon systems have been installed. They also can be refueled in the air. The B and the D respectively stand for the two-seat version of the aircraft.
